Ek Thi Daayan

Ek Thi Daayan is Kannan Iyer's directorial debut. The film’s story line is pretty simple and though many call it regressive and stereotyping, I think such stories need to be taken with a pinch of salt, just like the other mythological fantasies we follow.

To begin with, it would not really have been my first preference on the list of ‘the last thing you end your weekend with’ but because the credits had a Vishal Bhardwaj association and Yaaram, a song I like very much,I decided to test my mettle.

Ek Thi Daayan is the story of a young magician named Bobo (Emran Hashmi). Unresolved childhood mysteries eternally haunt him. Was it all a figment of an unhappy child’s playground, or were those incidents for real? Without answers his professional life, his relationships and peace of mind are all at the brim of insanity. Will he be able to tread the line between the two worlds?

Konkana Sen Sharma, Huma Qureshi and Kalki have all done a decent job, given their roles didn’t really have scope for ground breaking performances.

Inspite the fact that Kanan has avoided the usual RGV route of blood dripping, black crow flying over twisted heads, the first half of the film nicely builds up intrigue. But the last half hour seemed all about giving the latest technology in washing machines a run for their money – things started spinning out of control!!!
Many loose ends in the dialogues, storyline, character establishment made the perfect recipe for “spook to spoof, bus do minute main!” .

So for the supernatural starved Indian audience, let’s encourage attempts till we develop our very own ‘Six Sense'

For the others who cant get enough of Wicca, which is typically duotheistic, worshipping a god and goddess traditionally viewed as a mother goddess and horned god, you can now learn more from Ipsita Roy who started her Wiccan work in India many decades ago.
